The Forest From the Trees

Fontainbleu Forest, France, late November 2011 © Marissa Roth

A carpet of autumn leaves covered a path in the Fontainbleu forest on a chilled morning. The sound as I walked on them was delicate, like they were being moved in a gentle gust of wind. We undisturbed each other.

Mirrors & Chapters

Mare des Fées Pond, Fontainbleu Forest, France, November 2011 © Marissa Roth

I was once told by a remembered stranger that the only way I would know where I was going was to know where I had been. As another year closes, I find myself in a place of true calm reflecting on a wild ride year and looking forward to the turning of another page. Some of those reflections of the near and far past are seen fleetingly as mirrors on the faces of others; others are captured and held constant in a still image.

I am ever grateful for the journey that I am on and the extraordinary privilege of being a photographer.

From The Archive: Bhutan

Bhutan, circa 1991 © Marissa Roth

Marissa went to Bhutan when it was still pretty sparsely visited by tourists. It was her first deep introduction into Buddhism and magical, mysterious Himalayan cultures.

My dear friend and French 'sister'  Françoise Maurer took this photograph of me. We went to the Fontainbleu Forest in France in November with her husband Paul, who is a marvelous architectural photographer, and another American photographer, Herb Ascherman, to take pictures.
